I’m all about easy jeans and long t’s paired with a funny blazer. I feel comfortable in simple colours and grey and black are my go-to. Dressing for a photo shoot doesn’t mean you need to dress like someone else. If you’re uncomfortable, it’ll show. You don’t need to wear a fancy gown for great photos. You can always dress up casual clothes by adding some movement (we’ll talk more about that below). If you’re comfy in jeans and a plain t-shirt, that’s far better than looking like a movie star but feeling awkward!
Go for coordination over matching. Everyone in matching outfits can look a bit cheesy and it can distract from your surroundings. If you have a statement piece you’ve been dying to wear, start with that. That amazing article of clothing or outfit you know you need for your photos, and build from there. If your statement piece has multiple colours, pull those colours into your other outfits. Don’t worry if you don’t have “that” piece yet, we’ll get there!
Solids are much more forgiving than patterns. They keep things simple and ensure the focus is on you and your surroundings. Patterns can be distracting, especially large ones. If you do want to wear a pattern, go for it. The rule of thumb with patterns is to choose small or repetitive ones. Large patterns, horizontal lines (vertical lines can be okay), and shapes can be distracting, especially if your shirt gets wrinkled or twisted. Solids are much easier to work with.
Textures can add so much dimension to your photos. Don’t be afraid to add layers or some texture to your outfits. If it’s really hot, go with a flowy skirt or dress. They add such a fun and romantic element to your photos. Even letting your hair down is a great way to add some fun movement to your pictures.
The big question: What colours should I wear? Neutrals, muted, and earth tones are always a safe bet! Whites, tans, blacks, dusty blue, forest green – you get the idea. Bright or neon colours are a no from me; they take attention away from the scenery. Keeping colours simple makes your images timeless. Muted colours don’t mean avoiding bold colours. Bold colours can work too. If you want to wear yellow, go for mustard; if you want orange, go for burnt orange; for green, try forest or army green; and for red, go for maroon, etc.
Kat brings so much energy and creativity to her photo shoots and makes everyone feel relaxed. We are extremely happy with our photos! Since we met Kat, the number of framed family photos around our home has grown so much!
Kat is an incredible photographer! She is so lovely and kind and makes you feel so unbelievably comfortable even if you are a bit shy in front the camera. The quality of her photos and edits is outstanding and I was so so happy with how everything looked after she was finished. Would absolutely recommend to anyone!
Ruby Portrait SessionKat has been flexible and supportive in helping me with a Branding shoot before I even knew what one was! I'm really pleased with the photos which are now on my website and social media.
Kat is so naturally talented. She brings such a relaxed presence to the room and produces the most wonderful photographs! You can’t help but smile when she point the camera at you. Thank you for all of the memories you have captured so far.
I was recommended Kat by a colleague and little did I know that her photos would capture the special moments of that evening with such professionalism. Not only did I have a copy of all photos taken but Kat arranged to have an album produced recording these special memories. What an amazing and precious keepsake. I cannot thank Kat enough for the time and trouble she took to get everything right.
